Go: Next PhilHealth chief's mission is to restore integrity of the agency

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go said the mission of the next Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) president and CEO is to restore the integrity of the state health insurance agency in order to give Filipinos the assurance public funds are spent for quality health services rather than being wasted due to corruption.

Go issued the statement a day after President Duterte is to name Ricardo Morales’ successor in PhilHealth. Morales has resigned on the suggestion of the President, and also following the Senate’s investigation into the ause of Interim Reimbursement Mechanism (IRM) funds and the reported overpriced Information Technology system project of the agency.

The Senate health and demography committee chief also said the person whom the President will appoint as the new PhilHealth chief is known to be a “silent worker.”

“Sanay po siya sa pag-iimbestiga, ‘yun lang po pagkakaalala ko, maaaring silent worker lang po tong napupusuan ni Pangulong Duterte (He’s used to investigating. That’s what I remember. President Duterte could be tapping someone who is a silent worker),” Go said in an interview.

Nevertheless, the senator said whoever the President will appoint as the next PhilHealth chief should know how to balance improving PhilHealth services to the public while  addressing the perennial issues of deeply-rooted, systemic corruption which had been plaguing the agency for years.

He also said the next PhilHealth chief should have the “will power” to cleanse the agency and at the same time, be knowledgeable and wise in calculating and utilizing the agency’s funds.

Ang papalit ay yung talagang ang maririnig po ng tao ay ilang pasyente na ang natulungan ng PhilHealth at hindi nagbibilang kung ilan ang nananakaw  (PhilHealth should move on. The successor is someone you’d hear how many patients the agency was able to help and not someone who will count how much money has been stolen),” Go said.

“Iyon po ang gustong marinig ng Pilipino, at yun ang hinahanap ng Pangulo na tuluy-tuloy na ang serbisyo at wala pong masasayang ni piso  (That is what Filipinos are looking for, and that is what the President is asking for, continuous service and that not even a single peso would be wasted),” the senator stressed.
