"We are one with the Catholic community in mourning the passing of Archbishop Oscar Cruz due to multiple organ failure caused by COVID-19," he wrote in a statement. "We pray for the eternal repose of the soul of Archbishop Cruz."

According to Andanar, Cruz was instrumental towards fulfilling the sacred obligation of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) in strengthening and furthering the faith of all Filipino Catholics.

He hoped that Cruz's "spiritual lessons" would give Filipinos strength while facing the threat of COVID-19.

"Archbishop Cruz was a good friend and mentor. He was someone who was always a source of good news," he said.

"May his spiritual lessons remain amongst the faithful and be a source of strength and optimism, during our collective fight and recovery against COVID-19," he added.

Cruz passed away Wednesday at the Cardinal Santos Hospital due to a "lingering illness". He was 85.

Born on November 17, 1934, Cruz was the first Filipino rector of San Carlos Seminary of the Archdiocese of Manila from 1973 to 1978 and was an auxiliary bishop of Manila from 1976 to 1978. He became archbishop of the Archdiocese of San Fernando from 1978 to 1988.

He was appointed Archbishop of Lingayen-Dagupan in 1991 and was the head of the CBCP before retiring in 2009.
