16 Eastern Visayas cops test positive for COVID-19

TACLOBAN City - The Police Regional Office 8 (PRO8) has confirmed Saturday, August 29, that 16 police officers have been infected with coronavirus disease (COVID-19). 

This brought the total number of COVID-19 cases among PNP personnel in Eastern Visayas to 20.

"As frontliners, they are vulnerable to the virus, while the COVID-19 cases in Ormoc City are being investigated," PRO 8 Information Officer P/ Lt. Col. Ma. Bella Rentuaya explained.

According to the official, the 16 fresh cases came from personnel who underwent schooling in Laguna (2), close contacts of a confirmed COVID-19 case (1), Ormoc City (7), Northern Samar (1), Samar (3), and Catbalogan City (2).

Of the 16 new cases, she said only two have suffered flu-like symptoms, including diarrhea, loss of appetite and sense of smell, and difficulty in breathing.

"They are all in isolation provided by the local government units (LGUs). They are also closely monitored by the Regional Health Service 8 (RHS 8)," she added.

As early as May, PRO 8 Director Brig. Gen. Bernabe Balba has had an isolation facility ready for its personnel who would be classified as suspect, probable, and confirmed cases in a bid to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

He said they have converted a building within their camp in Palo, Leyte that could accommodate five persons at a time for isolation. It is managed by doctors and nurses from RHS.

He added that it had two separate rooms for male and female, wherein each room has its own comfort and shower rooms. 

Meanwhile, PRO 8 has also reported four recoveries, who are now back in their respective posts.
