The Zamboanga siblings took their respective wins in mixed martial arts but Fil-Am KC Carlos yielded to her Thai foe in muay thai in ONE: A New Breed Friday night in Bangkok, Thailand.
Drex made his statement clear after a successful debut in ONE Championship’s flyweight division by submitting Detchadin Sornsirisuphathin with two seconds to go – exactly at the 4:58 mark – before the end of second round.
The two showed back-and-forth action in striking and grappling throughout the match, but the 27-year-old Zamboanga showed the same aggressiveness in the first round to take the win away.
The newcomer from the Philippines, improving to a 9-5 win-loss slate, found the perfect opportunity to execute a rear-naked choke and put Sornsirisuphathin to sleep.
His younger sister, Denice, also won via submission and handily defeated Watsapinya Kaewkhong of Thailand in their women’s atomweight bout.
Denice towered over Kaewkhong in striking before the two took the game to the ground.
The 23-year-old Filipina only needed 88 seconds to end the match in the first round with a slick Americana lock at the 1:28 mark.
The undefeated No. 1 contender boasts an 8-0 record with three straight wins in the promotion, proving her worth to face atomweight queen Angela Lee.
Thailand, however, bounced back in muay thai bout after Wondergirl Fairtex beat Fil-Am KC Carlos in the strawweight division.
Carlos sustained a broken nose after a solid elbow strike from the 21-year-old Wondergirl, prompting the referee to stop the fight at the 1:06 mark of the second round.
In the main events, Brazilian Allycia Hellen Rodrigues dethroned Stamp Fairtex and captured the atomweight muay thai world title via majority decision while Rodlek PK.Saenchai Muaythaigym earned a title bout with Nong-O Gaiyanghadao after a stunning unanimous decision win over Kulabdam Sor. Jor. Piek Uthai in the muay thai bantamweight tournament final.
ONE: A New Breed was set in closed-door and audience-free venue in compliance with health protocols amid the coronavirus pandemic.
