Navotas barangay chair dies after beating COVID-19

The chairman of Barangay Bangkulasi in Navotas City died Friday several days after recovering from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Mayor Toby Tiangco said Ronaldo "Net" Reyes died of heart attack.

"Gumising po tayo sa nakalulungkot na balitang pumanaw na si Kap. Ronaldo 'Net' Reyes... Gumaling na po siya sa COVID-19 ngunit 15 taon na siyang may high blood (We woke up to the  sad news that Captain Ronaldo Reyes has died. He already recovered from COVID-19 but he has been suffering from hypertension in the past 15 years)," Tiangco said in a Facebook post.

Tiangco commended Reyes' "sincerity" and sacrifice as he led his village's fight against COVID-19.

"Kahit na gusto na niyang makapiling ang kanyang pamilya, nagsakripisyo siyang hindi umuwi para manatili silang ligtas at para maipagpatuloy niya ang pagtupad ng kanyang tungkulin sa barangay (Even if he wanted to be with his family, he stayed away to save them from the dreaded disease and fulfill his duties and obligation to the whole village)," Tiangco said.

"Kahit siya na mismo ang nagkasakit ng COVID-19, hindi pa rin napigil si Kap Net na magpaalala sa kanyang mga ka-barangay na mag-ingat parati at sumunod sa mga safety measures. Kahit sa kanyang huling araw, pagmamahal at pagmamalasakit sa mga ka-barangay pa rin ang kanyang pinairal (Even after he got infected with COVID-19, he did not stop reminding his constituents to take care of themselves and follow safety measures. Even in his last days, he showed love and care to his constituents)," he added.

Tiangco expressed his condolences to the Reyes family and to Barangay Bangkulasi.

"Ang tanging maisusukli natin sa kanyang tapat na paglilingkod ay siguruhing nasusunod ang kanyang mga bilin para sa ating kabutihan (We can repay his honest public service by making sure that his reminders are being followed for our own good)," Tiangco said.

The mayor advised his constituents to observe health measures, especially those who have family members with co-morbidities.

"...alam kong ayaw ninyong kayo ang maging dahilan ng pagkamatay ng inyong mahal sa buhay, kaya doble ingat din po kayo (I know that you don't want to be the cause of the death of your loved ones so please take extra care)," he said.
