Nurse nabbed for selling illegal drugs

CEBU CITY—A registered nurse who is also a graduate of medicine was arrested after he was caught allegedly selling illegal drugs on Wednesday in Barangay Labangon here.

Police said depression may have driven 31-year-old Jan Canillas Grado, a resident of Route II Honeyville Subdivision, Barangay Quiot, to peddle illegal drugs.

Maj. Elisandro Quijano, chief of the Abellana Police Station, said that according to the information they gathered, the nurse started selling illegal drugs after he flunked a licensure examination for doctors.

Police said they recovered from the suspect 22 packs of suspected shabu with an estimated value of  P87,100.

The suspect, who was driving a Mitsubishi Mirage car during the buy-bust operation, also yielded drug paraphernalia such as tinfoil, a lighter, and a weighing scale.

Quijano said they were able to corner Grado after they arrested another drug suspect, who pointed to the nurse as his supplier of illegal drugs.

He said the police learned that Grado was already using illegal drugs while still studying at a university in the city.

When he became a nurse, Grado proceeded to take a medicine course. He continued using illegal drugs until he took the licensure examination with 10 other classmates.

Police said that among his classmates, Grado was the only one who flunked the licensure examination.

“He became depressed. He started buying a large number of shabu because his dosage increased and he also started selling illegal drugs,” said Quijano.

A follow-up investigation is ongoing to identify Grado's source of illegal drugs.
