'Julian' brewing; LPA extension to bring scattered rain showers

Published Aug 27, 2020 10:08 am

The eastern sections of Visayas and Mindanao will experience scattered rain showers due to the trough or extension of a low- pressure area (LPA) that may develop into a tropical depression in the next 48 hours.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) monitored the LPA at 915 kilometers east of Daet, Camarines Norte before noon today.

Once the LPA becomes a tropical depression, it will be named "Julian," the 10th tropical cyclone to form inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility this year.

PAGASA said this weather disturbance is seen to remain offshore, far from the Philippine landmass, thus, the raising of tropical cyclone signal is less likely once it develops into a tropical depression.

Nevertheless, PAGASA advised the public and local disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned to continue monitoring updates regarding the potential development of this weather disturbance, as it may enhance the southwest monsoon that could bring rains over parts of the country in the next few days.

PAGASA said the LPA's trough may bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Biliran, Leyte, Northern Samar, Samar, Eastern Samar, Southern Leyte, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Bukidnon, Camiguin, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Davao Oriental within 24 hours.

The southwest monsoon or "habagat" will also bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Batanes and Babuyan Group of Islands.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be partly cloudy with some isolated afternoon or evening rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.
