Feast of San Agustin commemorated with masses Friday

Feast masses will be celebrated at 7 a.m. and at 5:30 p.m. Friday (August 28) at the San Agustin Church in Intramuros, Manila, in solemn commemoration of the Feast of Saint Augustine (San Agustin).

Known as the Doctor of Grace because of his miraculous transformation from his wayward ways through the perseverance of his mother, St. Monica and his mentor, St. Ambrose, St. Augustine discovered, through prayer, a change of heart.

San Agustin is of the Roman Catholic Church’s most popular saints and the revered founder of the Augustinian Order.

His feast follows that of his mother, Saint Monica, the patron saint of wives and mothers, whose feast day is commemorated today, August 27.

The praying of the holy rosary and a novena will be offered at 5 p.m. The faithful are encouraged to participate in the celebration online as only 10 percent of the church’s capacity or about 30 persons will be allowed inside the church.

Feast masses will also be offered in Iba, Zambales; Paoay, Ilocos Norte; Guigaquit, Surigao del Norte; and in Cagayan de Oro City.

Ordained priest in the year 391, he served as bishop of Hippo (now Algeria) in 396. His masterpiece, the “Confessions,” became a classic of Christian theology and western literature. Born in 354 in Tagaste, North Africa,

He died in 430 AD and was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Boniface VIII in 1303.
