Senators on Monday crossed party lines to condemn the latest bombing incidents in Jolo, Sulu where at least 11 people were killed and 34 people were injured.
“I express my deepest grief about the soldiers and civilians killed in today’s twin explosions in Jolo, Sulu. Nakikidalamhati ako sa kanilang mga pamilya at mga mahal sa buhay. Ipinagdarasal ko rin ang kaligtasan ng lahat mula sa mga gustong maghasik ng dahas at takot (I condole with their families and their loved ones. I will also pray for the safety of the people from any elements who wish to sow terror and violence),” Sen. Risa Hontiveros said in a statement.
“I urge authorities to immediately ensure our people’s safety and to conduct a full investigation into this act of terror…We are united with our kababayan in Jolo in their pursuit of justice and peace,” the senator said.
Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go also condemned the attack which coincidentally happened during the Commission on Appointments (CA) hearing on the appointment of Lieutenant General Corleto Vinluan Jr., chief of the Western Mindanao Command (WESMINCOM).
Go noted the country is already reeling with the crisis brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and yet terrorists are still roaming around to destroy Filipino lives.
Go also said the Chief Executive is already exerting all efforts to resolve the decades-old conflict in Mindanao and even reached out to various groups to achieve peace and order in the Southern region.
“Hangga’t hindi natin matigil ang terorismo sa bansa, mahihirapan tayong maisakatuparan ang inaasam nating ‘long-lasting peace’ sa Mindanao at sa buong bansa (Until such time we can truly stop terrorism in this country, it would be hard for us to achieve long-lasting peace in Mindanao and the rest of the country),” Go stressed.
“I call on all agencies of government to ensure that those responsible for these acts of terrorism are held accountable for their actions,” he added.
Sen. Francis Tolentino said he hopes Gen. Vinluan would be able to get to the bottom of the problem and be able to find the mastermind behind the twin explosions.
“Napakatagal na po itong problema sa Jolo. Habang nag-uusap tayo ngayon meron na naman pong sumabog ulit, General Vinluan (This problem in Jolo has long been running. While we are talking here, we are rocked by another explosion, General Vinluan),” Tolentino told the military official during the CA hearing.
“We wish you good luck and I’m sure pagbalik mo eh napakaraming suliranin ang haharapin. At alalahanin mo na hindi lang ikaw ang humaharap doon, ang buong pwersa ng Pilipinas ay kasama mo. (You will have a lot of problems to face. Just remember that you’re not the only one facing this problem but the whole force of the Philippines is with you),” Tolentino said.
