San Juan city gov't continues liquor ban, curfew

San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora has announced that a liquor ban and stricter curfew hours will still be enforced in the city under the general community quarantine (GCQ).

“Since we are now under GCQ ...  today (Aug. 19), I  want to inform all that our liquor ban will remain until Aug. 31. Liquor ban will continue, which means buying alcoholic drinks and drinking liquor in public places not allowed,” Zamora said.

He also said that curfew hours in the city remain at 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Zamora said the policies are needed to strictly implement home quarantine, to prevent the further transmission of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

“If there are fewer people in the streets, there is a higher chance that positive patients will decrease,” Zamora added.

The mayor said the liquor ban in San Juan was lifted when GCQ was first implemented in Metro Manila last May, and reinstated when the government placed Metro Manila under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) from Aug. 4 to Aug. 19.

To date, San Juan City has 1,494 total COVID-19 confirmed cases, including 56 deaths and 360 active cases.
