Manila impounds stray animals in schools, barangays

The Manila city government has impounded stray cats and dogs following requests from several academic institutions and barangays. 

About 13 stray cats and 12 stray dogs from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila campus in Intramuros, the College of the Holy Spirit in San Miguel, from the streets in Arquiza, Mendiola, Sta. Mesa and Tondo were transferred to the Manila City Pound on Tuesday (Aug. 12).

Veterinary Inspection Board (VIB) Director Nicanor Santos, Jr. said they will continue to conduct impounding activities in other areas upon the request of barangay officials. 

"Although the pandemic limits our movement, we see to it to respond immediately to those who will need our services," he said in a statement Tuesday. 

Santos also appealed to pet owners to be responsible in handling their pets especially amid the pandemic. 

"Do not let your pets roam around the streets, especially during this crisis. There is a threat and it is important that we keep everyone safe, including animals," he said.

The VIB is offering free veterinary services for Manila residents who are pet owners. Its animal clinic is open for consultation and vaccination from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays to Fridays.
