Manila among cities with fewest COVID-19 deaths—Mayor Isko

The City of Manila is among the cities with the fewest coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) deaths in Metro Manila, the city mayor said on Monday (Aug. 10).

Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso also claimed that they have managed to limit the city's number of cases to 5,000 despite having a dense population of up to three million people.

City government data showed that as of Aug. 7, Manila has a total of 5,179 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Of this number, there are 1,253 active cases, 3,690 recoveries, and 236 deaths.

“Manila has about 2.4 million population at nighttime and about 3 million daytime, and 70,000 per square kilometer. We are the densest city in Asia. But despite all these things, these setbacks with regards to demographics, we managed to control it at 5,000 in our case,” he said in an interview with ANC.

Domagoso also said the city's positivity rate, or the percentage of those who tested positive for the disease, is at 11 percent, while their case doubling time is at around seven days.

However, the Manila mayor stressed that the danger of being infected with COVID-19 is still present in the city.

"There are 1,300 active cases so there is danger in Manila. I always believe that one case is danger, 1,300 is more dangerous, sort of saying. While it is true that we manage, this does not give you guarantee that we are safe,” he said.

Domagoso reminded Manila residents to continue practicing the health and sanitary protocols issued by the government to help fight the pandemic.
