Robredo hears teachers' plight on school opening woes

Several teachers still don’t have copies of learning modules and they are not yet ready for the opening of classes on August 24, Vice President Leni Robredo said on Sunday.

During her weekly radio show, Robredo recalled her last Friday’s meeting with a group of teachers where they raised their issues with the modular learning preparations.

“Noong Friday, 17 days before the opening of classes, hindi pa nila alam kung saan nila kukunin iyong modules (they don’t know where to get their modules),” Robredo said on her “BISErbisyong Leni” radio program.

The teachers also told Robredo about their concerns on the printing of the modules, postponement of the opening of classes to a later date, as well as the occupational health and safety in their workplace amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Humihiling sila na sana man lang ma-test sila. Humihiling sila ng regular medical check up. Humihiling sila na siguraduhin lang na habang nagre-render sila ng service, protektado (They are requesting that they will be tested. They are asking for regular medical check up. They are requesting they will be protected while they render service),” she said.

”Basically, ang sinasabi nila hindi sila handa at humihingi sila ng tulong from DepEd (Department of Education) na maalalayan sila (Basically, what they are saying they are not ready and they are asking help from DepEd to assist them),” Robredo noted.

Heeding the call of teachers, Robredo said she will send a formal letter to inform DepEd about the plight of the teachers.

“Mayroon silang appeal sa DepEd na nagpromise akong icha-champion ko iyong kanilang appeal. This week siguro, or Monday or Tuesday ipapadala ko sa DepEd (They have an appeal to DepEd that I promised to champion. Maybe this week, Monday or Tuesday I’ll send it to DepEd),” she said.

In July, DepEd said it had started printing the modules for students who would be unable to participate in online classes. Division and district offices are in charge of printing.

The agency has allotted P9 billion for the printing of the learning modules to be used by students for the upcoming school year.

Robredo urged the DepEd to clearly convey these messages to the teachers so they will be aware of the modular learning preparations.

“Baka may lost in translation sila. Hindi alam ng teachers how to go about it. So siguro iyong paki-usap natin sa DepEd, ayusin iyong communication structure (Maybe they are lost in translation. The teachers don’t know how to go about it. So our request to DepEd, it should fix the communication structure),” she said.
