Trough, southwest monsoon spell rainy weekend across PH - PAGASA

Most parts of the country will continue to experience rains this weekend due to the trough or extension of a low pressure area near Luzon and the southwest monsoon, the state weather bureau said.

In its latest weather update issued on Friday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said it continues to monitor the LPA which was last spotted off 325 kilometers northeast of Virac, Catanduanes or 520 kilometers east of Infanta, Quezon.

PAGASA weather specialist Ezra Bulquerin said that while the LPA is still moving off the waters near Luzon, its trough will bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, Bicol Region, Central and Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, and Caraga.

Meanwhile, Bulquerin said the southwest monsoon or "habagat," the weather system associated with the rainy season, will prevail over parts of Luzon and Visayas particularly MIMAROPA and Western Visayas where cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are expected.

PAGASA warned residents in areas affected by the LPA extension and habagat on possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate with at times heavy rain showers.

Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers will be experienced in the rest of the country due to localized thunderstorms which could also bring flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms, Bulquerin added.

According to PAGASA, no gale warning has been raised across seaboard in the country today but fisherfolks were advised that coastal waters in Luzon and Visayas will be moderate to rough with wave height reaching up to 2.8 meters, while sea conditions in Mindanao will be light to moderate.

Based on PAGASA's climate outlook, at least two to three tropical cyclones are expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) this August.

Last week, Tropical Storm "Dindo" entered PAR, the fourth tropical cyclone for 2020, after Typhoon Ambo (Vongfong) in May, Tropical Storm Butchoy (Nuri) in June, and Tropical Depression Carina in July.

PAGASA said an average of 20 tropical cyclones is expected to enter PAR each year.
