P80 M fake cigarettes, N95 masks seized in Bulacan

Counterfeit cigarettes and face masks worth P80 million were uncovered in a warehouse in Marilao, Bulacan following a raid conducted by Customs agents.

A total of 1000 master cases of cigarettes bearing brands like Marlboro premium cigarettes, which are believed to be fake, were found stored in the warehouse located in Barangay Sta. Rosa, Marilao, Bulacan.

The raid also yielded 648 boxes of fake N95 masks designed with logos of famous luxury fashion brands.

According to the bureau, the raid was conducted after they received an intelligence report that counterfeit goods are stored in the warehouse.

Armed with a letter of authority (LOA) signed by Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero, a team from the enforcement and intelligence divisions of the bureau raided the warehouse on Wednesday, August 5.

The seized items were later transported to the Enforcement and Security Service-Security Coral located at the Port of Manila for further inventory and investigation.

The bureau said the operation was part of its “strengthened crackdown against illicit cigarettes.”

“The latest apprehension affirms the bureau's steadfast commitment in preventing the entry of smuggled items into the country as well as protecting the public from the dangers of using fake items such as protective equipment especially during this time of pandemic,” Guerrero said.

He added that the bureau is now studying the possibility of filing a case against the warehouse owner pending investigation. (Betheena Unite)
