Hundreds evacuated after floods hit parts of Davao City


DAVAO CITY - Over 700 individuals from different parts in the city have evacuated after heavy rains caused flooding here on Tuesday night.

Based on the initial data from the City Government, 223 individuals composed of 94 household evacuees sought shelter at the Lourdes Parish in  Bangkal. The number of evacuees inside the parish ballooned to around 600 at 7 p.m. on Monday night.

Some 100 individuals also evacuated to the Talomo Proper Barangay Hall.

In a radio interview over the Davao City Disaster Radio as of 9:30 pm Tuesday, Barangay Captain Bendor Calamba of Barangay Talomo initially said "over 1,000 residents" in Barangay Talomo have evacuated to the National Housing Authority (NHA Bangkal) covered court, San Lorenzo Parish, and Talomo Proper Barangay Hall.

"Sa mga naa sa evacuation area mga sobra libo ni ka indibidwal ania karon nakabakwit sila (There are over 1,000 individuals who have evacuated here)," Calamba said.

Calamba said they have distributed food and face masks to the evacuees.

"Walay casualty nareport. Duna daw panimalay na naanod per subject pa for re-verification ang reports (There was no casualty reported. They said there was a house washed away by the flood but we still have to verify that report)," Calamba added.

The Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said due to the trough of low pressure area ( LPA ), Talomo District, Bunawan District, Agdao District, and Buhangin District experienced moderate to heavy rain affecting nearby barangays.

It said the rest of Davao City experienced cloudy skies with intermittently scattered rain showers.
