Improved weather seen as 'Dindo' leaves PAR

Published Aug 3, 2020 02:37 pm

Weather is expected to gradually improve in most areas affected by monsoon rains as severe tropical storm "Dindo" (international name "Hagupit") left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) Monday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) spotted Dindo at 555 kilometers north-northeast of Basco, Batanes at around 10 a.m.

Batanes and Babuyan Islands may still experience occasional light to moderate to at times heavy monsoon rains.

Scattered monsoon rains may also affect Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Apayao, Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, Zambales, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, and Quirino.

Monsoon rains will gradually weaken in these areas as Dindo continues to move further away from the Philippines.

Tropical storm "Sinlaku" (international name) and Dindo did not directly affect the country but both tropical cyclones helped enhance the southwest monsoon or "habagat" that brought rains of varying intensities over Luzon and some areas in Visayas and Mindanao last week.

The tropical cyclone-enhanced monsoon rains slightly boosted the water levels in Pantabangan and Angat Dams in Nueva Ecija and Bulacan, respectively, based on PAGASA monitoring Monday.

Pantabangan Dam's water level rose by 26 centimeters to 177.14 meters on Monday, from 176.88 meters last Sunday.

The water level in Angat Dam also increased to 182.18 meters on Monday, up by 27 centimeters from Sunday's 181.19 meters.

Pantabangan and Angat dam's current levels, however, remain way below their normal high water level during the rainy season at 216.0 meters and 212.0 meters, respectively.

PAGASA said a new low-pressure area (LPA) at 450 kms east-southeast of Davao City is less likely to develop into a tropical depression in the next 48 hours but its trough or extension may bring rains over Caraga and Davao region within 24 hours.

Scattered rains and thunderstorms will affect Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, and Davao Occidental.

Weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said rains from the trough of the LPA may affect Western Visayas and Palawan in the next few days.

The rest of the country will remain partly cloudy to at times cloudy with rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.
