ILOILO CITY—Mayor Jerry Treñas was teary-eyed when he was caught on video during the Monday flag-raising ceremony while leading the Lord’s Prayer as Iloilo City continued to face the threat of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The flag-ceremony, which was broadcast live over Facebook, had Treñas becoming emotional as he led the closing prayers.
“Father, hear our land,” Treñas pleaded.
Prior to his emotional prayer, the mayor considered COVID-19 as the biggest challenge he has faced since entering public service in 1986.
“We have no road map for this,” Treñas admitted.
“But with the help of everyone, we can survive this pandemic,” Treñas added.
On Sunday, the mayor ordered the temporary closure of the Iloilo Fish Port after two personnel were infected with COVID-19, and one of them died.
The city also saw rising cases of locally transmitted COVID-19 cases that made Treñas order strict lockdown in two barangays (villages).
Meanwhile, Treñas is also considering work-from-home arrangement for Iloilo City Hall employees, who are 55-years-old and older, to curb the cases of local transmission after a staff of City Councilor Alan Zaldivar tested positive for COVID-19 last week.
