PLM to be placed under two-week lockdown

The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) will be placed under a two-week lockdown in response to the rising number of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) cases among its employees. 

In a statement released Sunday afternoon, PLM said it already has four confirmed COVID-19 patients among its staff. Of this number, two have recovered and one has died.

The university also bared that they have one suspect and three probable cases.

"While records do not suggest that there is community transmission in campus, PLM is taking these steps as precautionary measures," its statement read.

"During the downtime, PLM officials will review and reassess plans and protocols in its existing COVID-19 mitigation and disinfection measures to ensure a more effective response," it added. 

The lockdown is also its way to help frontline health workers get a timeout after months of battling the pandemic, PLM said.

Over the weekend, several medical groups called for Metro Manila to be placed under a stricter community quarantine to curb the spread of the disease and help frontline workers get breathing room. 

"As a University which produces doctors, nurses and medical professionals, we believe it is necessary to respond to the public health crisis by listening to science and the inputs of medical experts," it said in its statement.

PLM said a "very limited number" of "highly essential" workers like IT and server maintenance staff, disinfection and sanitation crew, and security personnel, will still be made to report to the campus.

Visitors will not be allowed to enter campus grounds. Document submissions will be accepted as deliveries and all transactions will be carried out online during the lockdown period.

The university also said that it is setting aside funds to buy rapid test kits that will be used to test returning employees.
