Nurse killed as ambulance is strafed with bullets in Palawan

Unidentified ambushed on Saturday an ambulance with volunteer medical rescuers onboard in Roxas town of Palawan, resulting in the death of a nurse and wounding of another.

Lt. Col. Imelda Tolentino, spokesperson of the MIMAROPA (Mindoro Oriental and Occidental, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) regional police, said they were now investigating the motive behind the attack, which included the possibility that the ambulance could have been mistaken for a police car.

She identified the fatality as 51-year old nurse Aljerome Bernardo. Driver Alex dela Peña, on the other hand, suffered bullet wounds, and is now in critical condition.

Tolentino said the vehicle with four responders from Rescue 165 assigned in Dumaran, Palawan was travelling along the national highway of Barangay Dumarao in Roxas town, heading to Puerto Princesa City, at around 3 p.m. when gunmen started shooting at the car in Sitio Stockpile.

The attack instantly killed Bernardo who was hit in the chest.

Tolentino said they have yet to identify the attackers.
