355 arrested in Cebu City for violating quarantine protocols

CEBU CITY—Hundreds were arrested for violating quarantine protocols on the first day that the city transitioned from modified enhanced community quarantine (MGCQ) to general community quarantine (GCQ) last Saturday, August 1.

          Police Col. Josefino Ligan, chief of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), said 355 persons were arrested in the Synchronized Enhanced Management Police Operations in relation to enforcing health protocols in the city.

          Ligan said most of the violators were caught outdoors without quarantine passes (QPs).

“We arrested 155 individuals who were on the streets without quarantine passes. The other violations were non-wearing of face masks and failing to observe physical distancing,” said Ligan.

Ligan said police observed maximum tolerance by reprimanding some violators but cases were filed against those found to be repeat offenders.

“They thought that just because we are already under GCQ, they can just go out even with QPs. We don’t have the data for now but repeated offenders were charged to really teach them a lesson,” said Ligan.

Although the city was already under GCQ, QPs are still needed when going out based on the Executive Order No. 86 issued by mayor Edgardo Labella.

During Sundays, no one will be allowed outdoors except for authorized persons outside residence (APORs).

“The only way to sustain the gains that we achieved in the previous month is for us to stay at home. We are still under quarantine period,” said Ligan.

In the August 1 bulletin by the Department of Health Central Visayas, the city has recorded 9,053 confirmed coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases.

Of this number, 2,942 were active. The city also has 5,591 recoveries with 520 deaths.(Calvin D. Cordova)
