PH Army launches monitoring system to combat virus

Seeking to strengthen the monitoring of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases among its personnel, the Philippine Army (PA) inaugurated its own Telemedicine Information System (PACTIS) at the Army headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City on Friday.

Through the PACTIS, the Army will be able to systematically record and consolidate detailed information of identified personnel and their dependents who have tested positive for COVID-19, said Lieutenant General Gilbert Gapay, PA commanding general.

He added that it will also eliminate the manual collection and encoding of data from different major units, thus, enabling a more systematic recording of probable, suspected, cleared, recovered and death cases within the Army.

"We stress the importance of preserving the force so that we could focus on accomplishing our various missions," Gapay said.

"Through this system, we will be able to further protect our men and women working in the frontlines as well as their families from the onslaught of this pandemic," he added.

The project was initiated by the Office of the Army Chief Surgeon and Office of the Army Chief Nurse through the Army Signal Regiment.

The military was not spared when the pandemic started wreaking havoc in the country earlier this year.

Army personnel were among those who were deployed in the frontlines to man quarantine checkpoints; deliver medical supply, equipment and personnel in various areas; and assist locally stranded individuals (LSIs) to get back to their home provinces.

The Army has yet to release data as to how many of its personnel were infected by the disease but the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has since recorded nearly 400 infections.
