Use of gasoline as disinfectant harmful to humans, chemists warn

A group of chemists warned the public that gasoline cannot be used as a disinfectant as it may cause harmful effects. 

The Integrated Chemists of the Philippines (ICP) noted gasoline could actually cause adverse reactions when inhaled. 

"Pinapaalalahanan ng ICP ang lahat na HINDI ginagamit ang gasolina upang gawing panlinis o disinfectant ng mga bagay-bagay. Makasasama ito sa tao

lalo na kapag nalanghap ang singaw nito (The ICP reminds everyone that gasoline is not to be used as a cleaning agent or disinfectant. It is harmful to people, especially when inhaled)," the group said on a Facebook post. 

President Duterte, in a televised briefing on Friday, mentioned the use of gasoline as disinfectant. 

He said, “Pag walang alcohol available...magpunta ka lang diyan sa gasoline station, pagkatapos magpatulo ng --- that’s disinfectant ...that’s disinfectant),” said Duterte. 

The president said the same during a televised briefing last July 21.

Both Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque and Department of Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire then explained the public should not take the suggestion seriously deeming Duterte’s remark a “joke.”

Based on the website of the US National Library of Medicine, exposure to gasoline may cause skin irritation, headache, dizziness, aside from harmful effects on the nervous system.
