Tackle pandemic first before the death penalty - Binay

Senator Nancy Binay on Thursday reiterated she is against the reimposition of the death penalty maintaining there’s already "so much death happening around us” as caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“Sa akin yung timing din eh (For me, it's also about the timing). Everyday, there are reports na 20 ang namatay (who died) today, the next day 30, 40,” she stressed in an interview with CNN Philippines.

“The conversation will shift towards death again when there’s so much death happening around us. Para sa akin, at the moment, mag-focus muna tayo kung paano tayo mabubuhay, at kung paano natin bubuhayin ang ating mga kababayan, (For me, let’s focus first on figuring out how we can live, and how we can help our fellowmen also live amid the pandemic),” she added.  

The senator said she won’t back the proposal unless the government is able to fix the country’s justice system, which she believes disadvantageous to the poor.

“Kawawa yung mahihirap (The poor are at a disadvantage). They can’t afford the best  lawyers. Hindi magiging patas ang hustisya hanggang hindi naaayos  (Our justice will remain unfair until we are able to fix the justice system),” Binay said.
