Of 14 stranded Filipino seafarers in Brazil, one has died, 2 are recovering, and 11 have been repatriated

One of the 14 stranded Filipino seafarers who were found infected with the coronavirus 2019 in Brazil has died, two are undergoing treatment while the remaining 11 were already repatriated, Philippine Ambassador to Brasilia Marichu Mauro said on Thursday.

Mauro clarified that the 14 seafarers are not actually based in Brazil but were only offloaded there when their respective ships docked in Brazilian ports. 
 
The embassy has no report of other COVID-19 cases among the estimated 1,200 Filipinos who are working or living in Brazil. 
 
The Philippine envoy said the embassy conducts an active information drive through their Facebook page to keep the Filipinos in Brazil and other countries under its jurisdiction like Colombia, Guyana, and Venezuela updated about the guidelines being implemented by the Inter-Agency Task Force in Manila and the respective governments where the Filipinos are situated.
 
“Brazil is too big, as big as the United States of America. We cannot go to them at this time since airports are still closed. We reach out to them through our honorary consuls, Facebook page, and email,” Mauro said.
 
So far, the embassy has endorsed to the Department of Foreign Affairs several requests for repatriation among the Filipino nationals under her jurisdiction and just waiting for the final decision. 
 
Brazil, which is one of the worst-hit countries in the world by the pandemic, is second to the United States in terms of the number of confirmed cases and deaths from the coronavirus.
 
COVID-19 monitoring platform Worldometer showed that as of today, the total of confirmed cases in Brazil is 2,555,518 with 90,188 deaths and 1,787,419 recoveries.
