Davao chorizos being sold online found positive for ASF

CEBU CITY—Beware of purchasing chorizos that were made in Mindanao and being sold online.

          Dr. Daniel Ventura, the African Swine Fever (ASF) focal person of the Department of Agriculture Central Visayas (DA 7), said that chorizo samples in Davao tested positive for African Swine Fever or ASF.

          “Please advise all industry stakeholders to be vigilant on Chorizo de Davao being sold online. It was reported that regional task forces in Mindanao are jointly tracing private processors of chorizo products,” Ventura said.

          In a public advisory, the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) warned that without physical access to the items being sold, consumers buying meat online have no way of knowing its quality and rely only on textual description and images provided by the seller.

          In buying highly perishable food like meat, any inaccurate, false, or exaggerated presentation of facts may cause potential food safety hazard, the advisory added.

          The NMIS encouraged the public to buy meat from local stores and only from licensed suppliers.

          Buyers were reminded to check the physical properties of the meat which should have no unusual odor, no unusual color like greenish or red spots, and firm to the touch when thawed.

          The public is also discouraged from buying imported meat being sold outside coolers or refrigerators.
