Newest MB member Aquino no stranger to crisis

“I’m not a stranger to crisis,” said Anita Linda R. Aquino, whose appointment to the Monetary Board of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) comes as the country faces its worst economic performance in over two decades.

Hours after the BSP announced her appointment, seasoned banker Aquino said that after decades spent in banking and finance, she knows how to navigate today’s challenges brought about by the coronavirus.

Aquino is no stranger to crisis mode. Throughout her career, she has faced economic challenges such as the Asian financial crisis, and global financial crisis.
 

“I was in financial markets when the Asian crisis and the global financial crisis took place,” Aquino told the Manila Bulletin after President Duterte appointed her as member of the highest policy making-body of the BSP.

Aquino, with 25-years of experience in banking and finance, held posts in the area of securities and financial markets in several banks in Manila, New York and Singapore.


Before shifting to working in the public sector in 2017 as director of the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corp. (PDIC) and Department of Finance (DOF) chief-of-staff, Aquino has started her career with Far East Bank and Trust Co.

Then she shifted to various sectors in New York, including financial institution Citi, N.A., and philanthropic organization Charles A. Dana Foundation.

Her work experience with Citigroup also includes stints as Citibank, N.A. Manila, Corporate Sales and Structuring co-head, and Citicorp Investment Bank (Singapore), Ltd., Global Markets Regional Trading Business manager for Asia.

Aquino was also head of Global Distribution and Advisory at Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC), as well as Financial Markets Sales Head at Standard Chartered Bank, Manila.


“I think on the MB now, I’m the only one who has international banking stints, if I am not mistaken,” Aquino said.

Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III, who is also a Monetary Board member, persuaded Aquino to join the Duterte administration as DOF chief-of-staff where she was also appointed as Board Adviser at the United Coconut Planters Bank (UCPB).

Aquino earned her Master of Arts in Economics from Fordham University, and took a special program in Accounting and Finance at Marymount Manhattan College in New York.

She completed bachelor of arts in economics at the Ateneo de Manila University.
