ABS-CBN sports division part of network's retrenchment program

ABS-CBN has dissolved its sports production team as part of the implemented retrenchment program following the denial of a fresh franchise renewal last week, multiple outlets reported Thursday.

First reported by Tiebreaker Times and Spin.ph, the “painful” announcement came from the head of Integrated Sports Dino Laurena on his personal Facebook account.

Laurena extended gratitude to his co-workers in the division, which covers television crew and its digital sports arm S+A.

ABS-CBN host and former Ateneo volleyball star Gretchen Ho likewise revealed on Twitter on the same day that “ABS-CBN Sports officially signs off.”

ABS-CBN on Wednesday revealed that it will lay off a number of its employees effective August 31.

“The loss of their jobs comes at a time when the uncertain and perilous impact of the COVID-19 pandemic further makes our decision truly difficult, but inevitable,” the network’s management said in a statement.

“As much as it hurts us to implement this retrenchment program, this is the only way to ensure the continued employment of the rest of our ‘Kapamilya.’”

The recent development left a huge question mark on the fate of different sports leagues aired by the broadcast giant such as UAAP, NCAA, PVL and MPBL.

The UAAP, partners with ABS-CBN since 2000, said last week they will “conclude negotiations and evaluate” the situation after the House decided to junk the network’s franchise renewal bid.

Their broadcast deal expired at the end of Season 82.

NCAA, meanwhile, said last week they are willing to wait for the network’s decision on their broadcast partnership.
