Zamora prefers MM to remain under GCQ; 'We don't want to open up too quickly'

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora prefers to maintain the general community quarantine (GCQ) in Metro Manila after July 15.

In an interview over CNN Tuesday, Zamora said Metro Manila was able to achieve a balance between economy and health under GCQ.

"Under GCQ, businesses are already opening, livelihoods are already starting so we are already able to achieve a balance between economy, health, and the safety of our people,” Zamora noted. He added that Metro Manila is not yet ready to ease restrictions and shift to modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) to allow more people to go out because the number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) positive cases still continues to rise.

"At this point, we don't want to open up too quickly our city given the fact that businesses are already allowed to open," Zamora said.

"The starting of the economy is already ongoing ever since we shifted to MECQ (modified enhanced community quarantine). It's just that the national government grant would allow more people to be out, this is what will happen if we shift to MGCQ already. So I would prefer staying under GCQ at the moment," he noted.

On July 1, Zamora placed Agora Market on lockdown until July 15 after a vendor tested positive for COVID-19.

Zamora said all Metro Manila mayors met recently to discuss contact tracing and preparedness of hospital facilities.

"What we really need is to continue jump starting or restarting the economy at the same time maintaining minimum health standards. One thing that was discussed was we all cannot afford to go back to ECQ again. We only have to adjust to the new normal, we cannot shutdown the economy like what happened last March and April because we've seen the effects of that," he added.

President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to announce new community quarantine classifications Wednesday, the same day the existing guidelines end.
