Soldier killed, 3 others wounded in Palawan clash with NPAs

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan â€“ A soldier was killed, while three others were wounded, in a 10-minute firefight with New People's Army (NPA) insurgents in Sitio Ibangley, Barangay Abongan, Taytay town on Monday, July 13.

Third Marine Brigade (3^rd MB) Spokesperson Capt. Orchie Bobis identified the slain soldier as Private First Class (PFC) Christian Priela Cuarto from Nabua, Camarines Sur, while those wounded were Corporals Remuel Redondo and Charlie Carorocan, and PFC Marlon Escobar Jr.

Bobis said the soldiers were from the Third Marine Company of the Third Marine Battalion Landing Team (MBLT-3).

"Nagkaroon ng around 10-minute encounter between dito sa miyembro ng NPA at mga tropa natin. Mayron tayong isang casualty at tatlong sugatan," Bobis said.

Bobis said that they were still conducting an investigation on the incident.

Also on Sunday, the chief of police of Dumaran Municipal Police Station survived an ambush in the same area.

The Buenvinido Valleber Command (BVC) of the NPA has claimed responsibility for the two incidents.

"Inaako ng BVC Palawan ang ambush laban sa mga marines sa Taytay ngayong hapon. Bahagi ito ng aming tuloy-tuloy na pamamarusa sa mga ahente ng estado na malaon ng sumasalaula sa karapatan ng mga Palawenyo. Naging posible ang mga pag atakeng ito dahil sa marubdob na suporta ng masa na lubos naming pinasasalamatan," BVC said in a statement sent to The Manila Bulletin on Monday.
