Returning LSIs infect more health workers in Iloilo—DOH

ILOILO CITY—The Department of Health (DOH-6) found that health workers in Iloilo province are gradually being infected with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) by locally stranded individuals (LSIs) or those who returned after being stranded in another part of the country.

Dr. Jessie Glen Alonsabe, chief epidemiologist of DOH-6, said nine additional health workers in Iloilo province have tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend.

Alonsabe told Manila Bulletin in an interview Monday, July 13, that six health workers are from Bingawan town and three from New Lucena town.

The nine health workers were all in contact with LSIs who had to undergo mandatory quarantine at isolation facilities of both towns.

“We have to understand that of all contacts of our returning LSIs, it is our health workers who are facing more risks,” Alonsabe said.

Prior to the cases in Bingawan and New Lucena, five health workers in Alimodian town were also infected with COVID-19 by another LSI they were handling.

Meanwhile, Bingawan town has been reverted back to enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) since midnight of July 13 to contain COVID-19’s spread. Mayor Mark Palabrica announced that only those with quarantine passes are allowed to go out of their residence. The town’s municipal hall and rural health unit (RHU) have also been closed.

Mayor Liecel Mondejar-Seville of New Lucena likewise ordered the temporary closure of the town’s municipal hall and RHU.
