The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-6) in Western Visayas is strengthening its fight against corruption.
“The public believes that money is not the only root of all evil, but corruption in government offices is also the root of all evil,” warned DENR-6 Regional Director Jim Sampulna.
“Corruption may exist in all government processes and procedures in the department, such as in requests and issuances of permits, application for land titling, request for public land survey and other services that we offer to the public,” acknowledged Sampulna.
For instance, DENR-6 found in 2015 that some of its employees were involved in issuing fake land titles at once-famous beach destination of Sicogon Island in Carles town, Iloilo province. The land titles, which were later revoked, were actually covering a body of water and not a land.
DENR-6 is pushing for stronger transparency and accountability measures.
One key aspect is the elimination of red tape.
“Let us make sure to reduce the processing time of all documents from application to release,” Sampulna said.
