Police Lieutenant General Guillermo Eleazar, commander of the Joint Task Force on coronavirus disease Shield (JTF COVID Shield), maintained acts of defiance relating to the same would only result in unnecessary confrontation that could affect traffic at quarantine control points (QCPs).

“The set of rules for motorcycle backriding is a balance between safety and the necessity of transportation. Our motorists have long requested for this and now that it was finally granted, please do not abuse it,” Eleazar said.

“We appeal to the public not to make any further alibi to justify any violation of these rules, otherwise, it will only result in their inconvenience,” he added.

The Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) has allowed motorcycle ride sharing Friday with the National Task Force (NTF) Against COVID-19 already crafting initial guidelines that were sent to the JTF COVID Shield for implementation.

Among other requirements, motorcycle backriding is allowed only for married, live-in and same sex couples who could present proof they are living in the same house as provided by their respective barangays.

According to NTF rules, both driver and passenger should also wear minimum personal protective equipment including protective face masks and helmets.

The NTF Against COVID-19 also said that there should be a barrier between the driver and passenger, something that did not sit well with motorcycle enthusiasts who claimed such a hazard.

However, Interior and Local Government Eduardo Ano, who serves as the vice chairman of NTF COVID-19, said the use of a barrier is part of the minimum health safety protocol for physical distancing.
