Construction site in Taguig becomes breeding ground for COVID-19

A construction site in Bonifacio Global City (BGC), which was put on lockdown in June, has become a breeding ground for coronavirus cases (COVID-19) cases in Taguig City.

Taguig’s confirmed COVID-19 cases jumped to 1,347 on July 7, an increase by 120 from 1,227 cases on July 6. The city breached the 1,000 mark in positive cases on July 5 when it recorded 1,086 cases.

Of the 1,347 positive cases, Bgy. Fort Bonifacio, which covers BGC, posted the highest number of COVID-19 cases with 378, up by 104 from 274 on July 6. From 104 cases on July 4, Fort Bonifacio’s tally increased by 274 cases on July 7.

According to Bgy. Fort Bonifacio’s Facebook page, an additional 100 cases at the unnamed construction site were recorded by Taguig’s City Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Unit (CEDSU) bringing the total cases to 204 at the site alone as of July 6.

“As we get the results of the swab tests that (were) administered to 860 construction workers in the said construction site, the City of Taguig expected this and is ready for the spike in our positive cases,” according to
the barangay.

The Taguig City government put the construction site under localized lockdown from June 23 to July 7 to contain the spread of the virus when at least six construction workers tested positive for COVID-19 on June 23. No one was allowed to leave or enter the site during the lockdown.

“We believe that this has been contained since the construction area has been locked down, as early as June 23, upon report of a possible case, and all positive patients are removed from the area and placed in a national quarantine facility,” Bgy. Fort Bonifacio said.
