DSWD vows more support, programs for women, children against violence
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has vowed to continuously implement protective programs and services for victim-survivors of violence against women and children (VAWC).

The DSWD gave the assurance following the increasing "cases of violations" against women and children recorded since the implementation of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Luzon last March.
"As a national government agency and the lead in social protection, DSWD assists local governments units (LGUs) in the provision of social welfare and development programs and services to their constituents, including those who have been victims of abuse," it said in a statement.
The Department said it also extends technical assistance and resource augmentation to Local Social Welfare and Development Offices "so they can better respond to the needs of the disadvantaged sectors in their localities."
The DSWD took note of President Duterte's report to Congress that around 4,260 "cases of violations" against women and children have been recorded since the implementation of the coronavirus lockdown last March.
Of the total number of cases, the Chief Executive said 2,183 cases of violations were committed against women, while 2,077 cases involved children.
The DSWD said it provides the following assistance to victim-survivors of abuse: psychosocial care, psychosocial counseling, psychological/ psychiatric tests, provision of professional health services, referral for medico-legal examination, and provision of mechanisms for protection from mental, emotional, physical, sexual abuse, and other forms of exploitation.
The provision of clothing and personal items, legal and paralegal assistance, and referral or transfer to any DSWD, LGU, or registered and licensed private residential care facility for temporary shelter or protective custody will also be extended to the victim-survivors.
The DSWD said the victim-survivors can take refuge in their centers and residential care facilities that provide temporary shelter and protective custody to women and children in need of special protection. These include Marillac Hills and the Haven for Women located in the National Capital Region (NCR).
"Other DSWD Field Offices around the country also maintain their own facilities for women and children," it noted.
The DSWD, as head of the Inter-Agency Council on Violence Against Women and Their Children (IAC-VAWC), called on the Council's member-agencies and service providers to continuously safeguard and promote the welfare and interest of the victim-survivors.
It sought the continued implementation of the existing programs and services aimed at protecting the victim-survivors of abuse.
The Council was created by Republic Act No. 9262, the "Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004."
Sitting as members of the Council are the Philippine Commission on Women, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Civil Service Commission (CSC), Commission on Human Rights (CHR), Department of Justice (DOJ), Department of Health (DOH), Department of Education (DepEd)Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Philippine National Police (PNP), Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC), and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
Under RA 9262, the 12 agencies under the Council are mandated to "formulate programs and projects to eliminate VAW based on their respective mandates, develop capability programs for their employees to become more sensitive to the needs of their clients, and to monitor all VAW initiatives."
