Gen. Farnacio on his 3-year stint: job well done, but not mission accomplished
By Marie Tonette Marticio
TACLOBAN City - "It was a job well done, but not mission accomplished," this is how outgoing 8th Infantry Division Commander, Maj. General Raul Farnacio described his 3-year stint in Eastern Visayas.
The official, who is set to retire in August disclosed that he only had 6 battalions when he assumed post in Samar.
"Maaaring nacontain namin dahil alam niyo naman siguro na very meager ang resources. Kakaunti lang din 'yung troops because the 63rd and 46th IB only returned late last year," he lamented.
Farnacio will relinquish his post to Major General Pio Diñoso III, who is currently assigned as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics in the General Headquarters at Camp Aguinaldo.
"We have accomplished something, not that much, but at least I have enjoined other agencies na samahan kami dahil hindi militarization ang problema nila, 'yung deliverables ng government," he noted.
The official shared that his notable accomplishment in Region 8 is "the realization of the communities and their constituents."
"Kung hindi mo magigising ang katotohan, maaaring madedeceive at maaagitate pa sila, kaya ang mga political personalities nagsama-sama kami para lang tumulong sa conflict areas," he added.
According to him, over 1,700 rebels surrendered during his term, and there are only about 360 armed rebels left, 80% of which are in Samar Island.
"Malalim na atrasan kasi ang Samar area, highly vegetated and deprived ang mga tao sa bundok. Ang mga tao sa Leyte nagsusumbong, daanan lang dito at sunod-sunod ang nagsusurrender," he said.
He then disclosed that he has no plans of holding a government position yet, nor entering politics.
"38 years of service is already enough. I need to get some rest and be with my family first," he said.
