“We received positive news that she’s doing very well,” Confiado said at the Laging Handa briefing.
At present, he said the embassy is coordinating with the Department of Foreign Affairs regarding the repatriation of several Filipino nationals displaced by the outbreak of the pandemic as the Egyptian government prepares to reopen the Cairo International Airport early next month.
The embassy, Confiado added, is making representations with Egypt’s immigration authorities for the exit visas of both documented and undocumented Filipinos before their repatriation, the schedule of which shall be determined by the DFA.
According to the DFA, there are a total of 5,717 overseas Filipinos in Egypt. Around 1,800 of them are categorized as professionals (skilled and unskilled) and about 1,700 are dependents. Many are employed as service workers, nurses, hospitality workers (hotels), and factory workers.
Confiado said the embassy was able to distribute more than 200 food packs to affected Filipinos through its initiatives while another 300 packs were distributed with the help of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
To date, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Egypt is 61,130, with 2,533 deaths and 16,338 recoveries.
Meanwhile, Confiado said the embassy is awaiting the autopsy report on the death of one Filipino national in Sudan to determine if the cause of death is related to the pandemic.
