Col. Henry Biñas, Bacolod City police director, said the perpetrators are also believed to be behind other crimes perpetrated in the island of Negros, including Negros Oriental.
Carl Fmg Nolens, 76, was awaked at around 2 a.m. on Wednesday by a noise from the rooms that were being searched by the unidentified armed robbers.
Maj. Charles Gever, head of Police Station 4, said that a burst of gunfire was then heard, prompting the foreigner's wife to jump off their balcony to escape. She was injured during the escape.
The armed robbers, who were wearing improvised face masks fled, bringing with them a bag containing a cellular phone, P20,000 cash, and a pair of shades, he added.
Nolens was declared dead at a hospital due to three gunshot wounds in the stomach, the station commander said.
Gever said the robbers entered the victim’s house through the sliding window on the second floor, and hogtied his brother-in-law who was sleeping at that time at the living room.
Police recovered from the scene four fired cartridges of an unknown long firearm, a live ammunition of a suspected .9mm caliber, and an empty shell of .45 caliber.
Biñas said that he directed Gever and the investigators on the case to conduct an in-depth investigation to give justice to the victim and his kin. Persons of interest are already in the custody of the police.
The assistance of other police units in the island such as the Regional Intelligence Division, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and Regional Drug Enforcement Unit (RDEU) was also sought for the speedy solution of the case.
Mayor Evelio Leonardia said that he had given instructions to the police to apprise him of the developments and progress of the investigation which he considered an utmost concern and priority.
Leonardia instructed the police to intensify police presence and deployment to prevent a similar incident. The police have already zeroed in on some principal suspects and are pursuing them, he said.
He condoled with the family of the victim and assured them of the city's involvement and assistance in the resolution of the case at the soonest possible time.
