Health official allays fears of rising COVID-19 cases in Leyte

By Restituto Cayubit  PALO, Leyte - The Leyte Provincial Health Office has appealed to the public to stay calm amid the rising number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients in the province. “There is nothing to worry about and no reason for the public to panic as everything is under control,” said Leyte Health Officer II Dr. Lesmes Lumen said. He added that the infected individuals were now safely isolated and contained at the quarantine centers of their respective towns. The sudden increase in the number of confirmed COVID-19- patients in the province came with the initial batch of the “Balik Probinsya, Bagong Pag-asa” Program (BP2), which was institutionalized through Executive Order (EO) 114 that President Duterte signed last May 6. The province of Leyte was one the pilot provinces of the program. The people’s anxiety peaked with the sudden unexpected rise of COVID-19 cases in the seven towns and one city in the province. The province of Leyte was COVID-19 free in the second week of May, but cases have mounted to 48 as of June 11, according to a report of the Department of Health in Region 8 (DOH-8). Other provinces with confirmed cases in Eastern Visayas are Southern Leyte (1), Biliran (1), Northern Samar (7), Western Samar (33). Eastern Samar remains to be COVID-19 free.
