By Jel Santos Because the new bus lanes for the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) along EDSA are not finished yet, buses will still have to use the Yellow Lanes on June 1 during the transition period. This was disclosed by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) spokesperson Assistant Secretary Celine Pialago on Saturday, May 30. Commuter buses stay on the yellow lane after the MMDA strictly enforced the use of yellow lane for buses. "We also need to install scaffolding tents for commuters to protect them from the weather." "The buses still have to load and unload along the Yellow Lanes. They are not allowed to load and unload between Quezon Avenue and Ayala Avenue," she added. She clarified that the designated pickup and dropoff points of buses are only North Avenue, Quezon Avenue, Taft Avenue, and Ayala Avenue. Moreover, Pialago said that they still need to clear the debris of the center island they removed along EDSA, as it may pose danger to commuters. Only a number of stations are tailor fit for the bus stops, she said. Pialago said that it was decided, for the meantime, that the buses need to use the Yellow Lane from North Avenue to Quezon Avenue, and will only go to the inner lanes where barricades are already installed. Buses must return to Yellow Lane upon entering Ayala Avenue to Taft Avenue. Such will also be observed by buses from South heading to North. On the other hand, Pialago said that the P33 million budget given to MMDA by the Department of Transportation will be used for the construction of bus stops and pedestrian overpasses along EDSA. "Included in this is the construction work for the loop, which is the median lane along EDSA," she said.
