Nation awaits next quarantine policy from Duterte

By Marjaleen Ramos President Duterte will announce before the weekend whether or not to shift Metro Manila to general community quarantine, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said Wednesday. DILG Secretary Eduardo Año, in an interview over DZMM Teleradyo, the inter-agency task force will finalize its lockdown recommendations for Duterte on Wednesday. Año expects the President to decide on the matter on May 28 up to Friday (May 29). "Ini-expect natin na bukas hanggang Friday ay makakapagdesisyon ang ating Pangulo," he told DZMM. Ano said Metro Manila Council (MMC) composed of the Metro Manila mayors want only one type of quarantine to be imposed across the whole Metro Manila. "Ang Metro Manila unique ano? Ang gusto nila kung ano yung i-dedeclare ng isang city mayor, gusto nila pare parehas silang lahat kasi nga contiguous ang lugar na ito," Ano said. He, however, said localized lockdowns may still be implemented should the Metro Manila transitions to GCQ. "Under GCQ naman, maipapatupad pa din natin yung tinatawag nating zoning. Kahit lumuwag nang konti, pwede pa din natin i-lockdown dalawang barangay, isang barangay o ang kalye." Metro Manila accounts for 33 percent of the gross domestic product (GNP) in the country which will be under quarantine up to May 31. With the relaxed quarantine protocols, Año in an interview over ABS-CBN said the economy will be reinvigorated as select industries will be allowed to operate. The DILG noted that a more relaxed general community quarantine (GCQ) will allow almost all industries to operate with the exception of amusement centers and those with mass gatherings.
