A Filipino community in the United Kingdom has set up "Shrine of Love" to honor and remember overseas Filipinos who succumbed to COVID-19 in a foreign land.
"This shrine was set up to honor our loved ones who have lost their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic," Kanlungan Filipino Consortium wrote on Facebook.
Dara Bascara of Kanlungan Filipino Consortium said that the pandemic made the public realize the importance of health workers, caregivers, domestic workers, and other "undervalued" workers.
"As the names of those who have died have been released, it has become clear how many of them were migrants and how many were Filipinos. We pay tribute to our fallen heroes. They are our heroes even if not all of them are health workers, because they are their families' breadwinners. Their families have depended on their hardwork, sacrifice, and now sadly, their lives are cut short, leaving their families in pains of goodbyes unsaid, no last moments shared, far from families and friends working in a foreign land," Bascara added.
Kanlungan Filipino Consortium said that the pandemic is "wreaking havoc" in the Filipino community in the UK.
According to a Commons library report, approximately 18,500 Filipinos work in the UK's National Health Service (NHS), the third largest group after British and Indians.
At least 25 Filipino healthcare workers have died since the start of COVID-19 outbreak.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Embassy said a total of 56 Filipinos in UK have died of coronavirus.
Kanlungan Filipino Consortium is welcoming anyone in the Filipino community who would like their loved ones to be included in the shrine, [email protected].
