By Aaron Recuenco and Dhel Nazario The collapse of a ledge on the parking level of a mall in Makati City did not affect the structural integrity of the building, the SM Development Corporation (SMDC) said Thursday. In a statement, SMDC said after the collapse that occurred at around 11 a.m. Thursday (April 30), structural experts and representatives of the Makati City government immediately inspected the building. "It was concluded that the incident does not affect the structural integrity of the development and that the buildings are safe for occupancy," the statement read. National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) director Maj. Gen. Debold Sinas said the Makati City police immediately secured the area and conducted an investigation after the incident. When questioned by police, security guard Nestor Eito said that while he was manning his post in a Chinese restaurant in front of the structure, they suddenly experienced a temporary electrical power shutdown. He then noticed that part of the concrete wall of the structure began to fall. People hurriedly dashed for their safety, and SM security cordoned the area. Another witness, Benny Zacarias, claimed that while his vehicle was parked in the loading/unloading bay of the building, he heard falling debris hitting the roof. He alighted and saw large pieces of concrete falling off from the building. He immediately ran for safety and was able to get out of the vehicle before it was hit by falling debris, Sinas said. "No casualty was reported, except two persons who had minor injuries," he added. Sinas said all the occupants of condominiums A, B, C, and D on the property were initially advised to vacate their units for inspection and assessment. After one to two hours, the occupants of condominiums A, B, and C were allowed to return. However, the occupants of Condo D, which was initially assessed to be connected to the collapsed structure, were asked to remain at the clubhouse. Sinas said most of the occupants of the building were Chinese nationals who were on the streets waiting for instructions from the condominium management. For its part, the SMDC said they are also investigating the incident. "The cause of the incident is under investigation and we will take whatever measures necessary to address the situation and avoid any recurrence," SMDC said in a statement. SMDC also said a thorough walkthrough of the mall premises and residential buildings was conducted by the buildings’ structural consultant, Sysquared & Associates, and representatives of the Makati City Government. "We are relieved to report that, apart from two people who sustained minor abrasions, there were no casualties resulting from this event," SMDC said. READ MORE: Wall collapses at Makati shopping mall
