NGO provides PPEs, Mingo meals amid COVID-19 pandemic

BACOLOD CITY — A non-government organization (NGO) is doing their share to help the frontliners and children in the height of the global crisis today brought by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Negrense Volunteers for Change Foundation Inc. (NVFC), led by its president Milagros (Millie) Kilayko, has distributed 5,000 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including 6,000 face shields to some medical frontliners in different hospitals in Negros Occidental.
She said that the frontliners are risking their lives more than the ordinary people. The group went the extra mile to help them by providing hospital gowns and face shields to protect themselves from getting infected.
The group opted to produce water proof gowns for low and high prevalence areas, because the NVC, has the mass base of volunteers and workers to churn out the simple design in volume, as well as distribution network to reach out of town locations whose frontliners face persons under monitoring (PUMs) and persons under investigation (PUIs).
Kilayko expressed her gratitude to all the donors and individuals who helped them reach their target to initially produce 2,000 PPEs. “What started as a little project to be crafted in volunteers’ homes grew to a project which needed NVC’s organizational support,” she said.
She said that she was glad that the workforce expanded, embracing more willing hands and hearts from all ends, and support popped beyond expectations. In fact, she said that some volunteer sewers from the marginal sector were tapped to help produce hospital gowns. The NVC foundation pays them a fair salary that will also help them survive with their families in these trying times.
Kilayko said that these sewers decided to take home only 80% of the fee, setting aside the 20% for any contingency costs, but hoping to give it back to the foundation so they can continue to serve more like them.
The NVC foundation reported receiving donations amounting to P2,785, 580 from individuals who were kind hearted enough to contribute. The biggest number of gowns were delivered to Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital here, followed by Cadiz District Hospital, Teresita Lopez Jalandoni District Hospital in Silay City, and Riverside Medical Center here.
A hundred gowns each were also delivered to Bacolod Queen of Mercy Hospital, Bacolod Adventist Medical Center, and Metro Bacolod Hospital. “We also have provided gowns to hospitals and health centers in several towns and cities across the island, all the way down south to Hinobaan’s Eleverio Decena Hospital,” she said.
Aside from PPEs, the group also donated food packs for hundreds of households and Mingo meals for the poor children. As of April this year, the group delivered more than 266,000 Mingo meals to children across the country. The first 1,000 Mingo Meals went to be part of the food pack distribution organized by a Church. “A fitting symbol of the love of God through His people, lifting one another,” she said.
She said that they will continue to ship out Mingo meals across the country to ensure that children under their care will not go hungry. She said that the process is going slower due to social distancing and alternating workforce to protect the health of the Mingo production team. “But, we will not allow this virus to get away and let our children go hungry,” she said.
