“The month of March marks the beginning of hotter seasons where fire incidents usually occur, including the very alarming forest fires. Let us observe the advocacy campaigns of Fire Prevention Month this March, by exercising vigilance and being mindful of our activities that may harm our forests”, DENR 8, Regional Director Tirso Parian Jr. said.
Recently, netizens reported through their social media incidents of forest/bush fire in Eastern Samar province
Parian ordered an investigation of the incidents through the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Borongan in Eastern Samar.
Report of CENRO Borongan revealed that a forest/bush fire occurred on March 14 in Barangay San Miguel, Hernani, Eastern Samar.
The fire damaged about seven hectares of timberland identified by the DENR as a reforestation site under the National Greening Program (NGP). Damaged within the seven-hectare reforestation site developed in 2011 under the NGP may reach over P100,000.
The same report also stated that another forest/bush fire affected an approximately four-hectare cogon area in Barangay Sto. Niño, Quinapondan, Eastern Samar on March 15.
Aside from this, a forest/bush fire was also recorded in Barangay Aguinaldo, General Mac Arthur, Eastern Samar on March 16 damaging a three-hectare land.
Further investigations are being conducted to identify the cause of the forest/bush fire incidents in the province.
Parian pointed out that forest fire threatens people, kills wildlife, and damages forests which are essential for human survival.
"We need the active cooperation of everyone, let’s protect and consider fire prevention measures for our forests”, Director Parian urged.
