High ranking NPA official, 2 other rebels killed in Baguio

By Zaldy Comanda BAGUIO CITY – The chairman of the National Military Commission of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) and his two aides were killed in a firefight with law enforcers who were about to serve an arrest and search warrant on them early Friday here. Police Regional Office-Cordillera (PRO Cordillera) Director Brig. Gen. R’win Pagkalinawan identified those slain as Julius Soriano Giron, his security aide, and a certain Lourdes Tan Torres, who was also known as Ma. Lourdes Dineros Tangco. Pagkalinawan said, Giron, who was facing cases of rebellion, murder, and frustrated murder, was also acting chairman of the Central Committee of the CPP/NPA, Pulitburo and Executive Committee while being concurrent head of the Northern Luzon Commission. He said, joint elements from the Philippine Army, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), PRO-Cordillera and Baguio City Police Office, together with soldiers from the Northern Luzon Command, 503rd Brigade, Army and the Civil Relations Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, conducted the operation against Giron and his men at No.10 Hamada Subdivision, Lourdes Subdivision Extension at around 3:30 a.m., March 13. During the service of the warrants, Giron, his security aide, and Torres, said to be a member of the CPP-NPA National Health Bureau, chose to fight it out with security forces rather than give themselves up. Recovered from them were an M16 rifle (chamber loaded), two caliber-.45 pistols, three hand grenades, a laptop, and cellular phones.
