By Warren Elijah Valdez DAVAO CITY – The City Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) here bared that residents in around 60 villages transecting the five-segment Central Davao Fault System had not voluntarily evacuated. (Photo by Warren Elijah Valdez / MANILA BULLETIN) CDRRMO administration and training chief Lyndon Ancajas said in an interview Thursday that residents in these villages have yet to vacate their homes despite the warnings of possible destruction of properties as they were living along the fault line. “Even with our reminders to the residents who are living close to the fault line to evacuate or relocate, because they are awaiting for the legal basis (document)," Ancajas said. A total of 60 villages in Barangays Bago Oshiro and Mintal in Tugbok District have been listed to be located along the Central Davao Fault System, which is comprised of five segments. The fault system also intersects with the Pangyan-Biao, Tamugan Fault, New Carmen Fault, Lacson Fault, and Dacudao Fault, which poses a serious threat of a magniture-6 earthquake or worse. Ancajas said they already installed markers to point out the location of the fault. He added that they already warned the residents to evacuate these areas because it was no longer safe for them to stay in these locations. “Same goes with those living in flood-prone areas. We should not wait anymore to be rescued when we are already hit (by a calamity). We are looking into the prevention aspect here,” he added. He also said that the City Council here might pass a legislation that would order residents to relocate to a safer area.
