Duterte expected to grace opening ceremony of Caraga sports meet

By Mike Crismundo BUTUAN CITY – Everything is set for the 2020 Caraga Regional Athletic Meet (CRAM 2020) where no less than President Duterte is expected to grace the opening ceremonies at the brand new state-of-the-art multi-million Siargao Sports Complex in the town of Dapa, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte province in March this year. Matugas spearheading the momentous activity. Ranking officials of the Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and heads of the different committees of the 2020 CRAM, were present during the blessing and inauguration. “Everything is set and we are ready to host this regional sports competition,” Matugas said. It will be the first time that more than 7,000 athletes, coaches, teachers and team captains will cross the sea from Surigao City Seaport towards the seaport of Dapa town. This huge regional athletic event will also be graced by Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go and other national and regional government officials. “We are ready to welcome all our guests, delegates coming from the 12 school divisions in Caraga Region,” stressed Matugas. The opening of CRAM 2020 was first set on March 7, but was postponed due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). It was later moved to March 14 until March 19. Meanwhile, aside from dormitory and gymnasium, the brand new sports complex includes two courts, one for basketball event, equipped with a basketball backboard made of fiberglass, the other for badminton and volleyball with rubberized flooring and with track and field, DPWH 13 Regional Director Engr. Pol M. Delos Santos said. “This new sports complex will boost economic growth in the island,” the region’s top DPWH 13 official added. The brand new state-of-the-art sports complex is expected to boost tourism in the area, in addition to the island being the regular host of other world sea sporting events such as world surfing competitions and the world game fishing tournament, also said Regional Director Mary Jean A. Camarin of the Department of Tourism in Caraga region.
