The "Kape't Ka Pete: Unang Sigwa ng Salin-awit at Tula ni Jose Lacaba" music and poetry night will be held on March 7, Saturday, 6 p.m. at Kamuning Bakery Cafe. Entrance to the event is at P250, which includes coffee and bread.
Artists who will be performing include singers Noel Cabangon, Cookie Chua, Hazel Faith, and Skarlet Brown, and poets Vim Nadera, Krip Yuson, Michael Coroza, Gemino Abad, and Marne Kilates.
Lacaba was recognized for his coverage of the First Quarter Storm, an anti-Marcos movement in the '70s. During martial law, Lacaba fought the late dictator through his writings -- he was part of the underground press and used the pen-name ‘Ruben Cuevas’ to write "Prometheus Unbound," a resistance poem that smuggled a hidden message into Focus, a state-run magazine.
Lacaba was imprisoned and tortured at Cramp Crame in 1974 for being part of a group of writers and artists who protested against the Marcos regime. His brother was the revolutionary and poet Emmanuel Lacaba, who was killed in Davao in 1976.
Pete’s poetry collections include Ang Mga Kagilagilalas na Pakikipagsapalaran ni Juan dela Cruz (1979), Sa Daigdig ng Kontradiksyon (1991), and Sa Panahon ng Ligalig (1991).
For more information on the benefit gig, people may reach bakery owner Wilson Flores at 0917-848-1818 or 0919-807-7788, or Vim Nadera at 0995-131-9743.
