Filipino workers in S. Korea's Daegu City are safe

By Marjaleen Ramos Around 4,000 Filipino factory workers in South Korea's Daegu City are safe amid the spike in the number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases there, the Philippine Embassy in Seoul said Tuesday. "'Yun pong pinakaapektado na area ay 'yung area ng Daegu. 'Yan po ay higit na 300 kilometers away from Seoul. Mayroon po tayo diyang—sa area na pinakamataas ang spike—mahigit apat na libong kababayan na mga factory workers," Consul General Christian de Jesus said in an interview with GMA’s Unang Balita. “Ang balita po na na-receive natin, ang mga employers po mismo ang tumutulong sa mga employee para sila ay ligtas. Sila po ay nananatili sa kanilang dormitory at sa kanilang factory. Hindi na po lumalabas kung hindi na po kinakailangan," he added. Filipino workers there were also provided with masks and sufficient working spaces to avoid being infected with the virus, De Jesus added. De Jesus assured that the consulate is in touch with Filipino community leaders as well as with the Korean government. He added that as of Tuesday, the number of confirmed cases in the coronavirus outbreak has reached 833 in South Korea, with seven fatalities. De Jesus also clarified that there is still no confirmed case of COVID-19 infection among Filipinos in South Korea. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Monday said there is no travel ban yet on South Korea but Filipinos are advised to "delay non-essential travel" to the country amid the COVID-19 outbreak.
